Ardour is open-source and free to use. On Linux, downloading the Ardour source code and running the app on your computer is almost seamless. On Windows and macOS, you can still use Ardour for free, but only if you can compile the provided source code yourself. If not, there are two options: a one-time donation or a subscription.
The free version of Podium offers decent VST plugin support (not limited to a certain amount of VST plugins per project) and a robust object-based project structure with a virtual mixer. It has powerful audio recording and editing tools, track freeze/bounce, and external MIDI controller support.
I have been developing DSP for over 10 years, in conjunction with real production, and musical skill, and recently did a freeware plugin, taking some of the best of minimal resource DSP, and put it into a freeware limiting pluagin. It is probably the best freeware limiter available, and sounds like fully professional DAW stuff. I am doing a bigger commercial version, with some additional stuff, one would expect from that, so if you want the extras, they will soon be available in a commercial product aswell.
Tracktion 7 is not free! They introduce a 2-second hissing noise in the editor every 15 seconds and this will not go away until you pay for the full version making this demo completely useless for anything at all
Since I had recently worked with both the free version, and umtimately, the paid full version, about a month ago, I thought it interesting, so I decided to download the free version, to see what Cakewalk thought of it currently.
I suspect while it needs no authorization, the software was built on it/with it (because it's based on the full software). And it may be what is protecting them from the user's playing non-free drum kits in the free VST? Usually protection schemes never go away, even in demo versions, they are always there at least a little.
Downloading Project5 2.5.1.252 from the developer's website was possible when we last checked. We cannot confirm if there is a free download of this software available. The most popular versions among the software users are 2.5, 2.0 and 1.0.
The program's installer is commonly called Drives Background Image2.exe, HORSEMAN.exe, Proj5.EXE, Project14.exe or Project5.exe etc. This free PC software can manage the following extension: ".p5p". We recommend checking the downloaded files with any free antivirus. You can run this free PC program on Windows XP/7/8/10/11 32-bit. This free tool was originally developed by Cakewalk, Inc. The software lies within Multimedia Tools, more precisely Editors & Converters.
Studio One 5 Prime is a free version of Studio One, a popular DAW developed by Presonus. It offers a subset of features from the full version of Studio One, but it's still a powerful DAW that can be used to create professional-sounding music.
Overall, it's a solid place to begin for those looking to make their own music for free. The only drawback is the lack of some features found in the full version, but for beginning users, that may not be a big deal.
The key difference is that Cakewalk does not include some of the 3rd party plug-ins that were bundled with SONAR Platinum. Because Cakewalk is now a free program, it does not include any licensed 3rd party plug-ins. However, if you have SONAR installed, the 3rd party plug-ins will also be available in Cakewalk, ready to use in all your projects.
Cakewalk has gained a ton of popularity in the last year as it is now fully free. With this being said, it is for Windows only, so this means that producers using Apple will not be able to use it.
This is a relatively simple DAW to use and it gives you a free 14-day trial when you download it. You have to pay if you wish to continue using it, but it allows you to test it out before charging you.

To install Cakewalk by Bandlab, also known as just "Cakewalk", go to the Cakewalk download page. Keep in mind that you will need to create a Bandlab account and download their desktop assistant, "Bandlab Assistant." It isn't too large and isn't a big problem, but if you don't want to download anything but Cakewalk, then just close the tab and go look at how much Ableton Live or maybe Reaper cost ($400 and $60, respectively. Cakewalk and Bandlab Assistant are free). If you're still here, then I assume that you're fine with downloading Bandlab Assistant.
The current software, Cakewalk by BandLab, is available completely free to download for Microsoft Windows via the BandLab Assistant app. While the premium add-ons via Sonar Platinum are not yet available, Cakewalk still retains all of the core capabilities of the classic DAW, with the addition of some new features.
Cakewalk by BandLab is a powerful DAW, regardless of cost. The fact that BandLab is offering it for free speaks volumes for its value. There is nothing to lose by downloading it, learning it, and using its features, even if you are already familiar with another DAW. For the home musician, Cakewalk offers a lot of features for literally no cost.

Personally I think it will be fairly safe to go to 2008 as 2010 is just extensions on top of it and enhancements for Visual Studio design time support for WPF. Therefore, the transition shouldn't be all that complicated. More like a 2005-2008 upgrade of a Win Forms or ASP.NET project, which is a cakewalk.
At the moment I've made it a practice to upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible. Although for an application developer it's got its own pitfalls, Ex. .Net Framework 3.5 is not found on most computers, and if I ship the bootstrap installer which is 20 MB it insists on an active Internet connection to download the files needed. The full installer is 198 MBs and though I don't like it, I have to ship it along with the software. 2ff7e9595c
